Thyroid disease
Thyroid disease is very common and occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce the appropriate amount of thyroid hormone. These hormones help regulate important aspects of the body to include heart rate, metabolism, and temperature. If too much or too little of these hormones are produced, a myriad of symptoms can develop leading to a poor quality of life or worse! Treatment may include medications and sometimes even surgery.
Thyroid nodules
Thyroid nodules are very common and are often found when imaging studies are done for other reasons or as part of a physical exam. Some patients may notice a lump in their neck or difficulty swallowing. Proper evaluation can determine if the nodule is worrisome or whether surgery may be required for evaluation or treatment.
Nodules are typically classified as being either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Most nodules turn out to be non-cancerous, but many patients are worried until a proper determination can be made. Some nodules may also secrete too much thyroid hormone leading to rapid heart rate, heat intolerance, anxiety, and other unpleasant symptoms.
Determining whether a nodule is worrisome can be made through ultrasound and sometimes fine needle biopsy. Fortunately, the surgeons at Pikes Peak ENT are certified to perform ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsies. They can help you determine whether a nodule is worrisome and whether surgery is needed. If you need surgery, they can expertly remove part or all of your thyroid if needed.
